Welcome to my website. I am an Associate Professor of Linguistics and German at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia in Canada. Burnaby is a suburb of Vancouver, and our main campus is located on a mountaintop in the metropolitan area, with views to the north of the Coastal Mountains and to the south of Vancouver Island and Mt. Baker in Washington, USA.
My research interests are in Sociolinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Pedagogy, and Technology in Language Instruction, with a primary scholarly focus in the field of World Englishes. I have published peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and an encyclopedia entry dealing with these topics. I am the guest editor of a symposium issue of World Englishes on “The Englishes of Europe in the New Millennium" (2007), and I am co-editor of a special issue of the journal Sociolinguistica on "New Media Practices: The Language Dimension" (2013).
I have taught a wide range of courses in Linguistics and German, on both the undergraduate and graduate levels, at Simon Fraser University, in my previous position at Wayne State University in Detroit, USA, where I also was the Coordinator of the Basic German Language Program, and while I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.
I recently finished a two-year term as President of the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE) (2012-14), and I served as Organizing Committee Chair of the IAWE 2010 conference, which was hosted here in Vancouver. Since 2009 I have been the Review Editor for the journal World Englishes, and more recently I was named Associate Editor of the new Journal of World Languages (Routledge Publishing), which was launched in early 2014.
