Broadly speaking, my areas of expertise are in the fields of sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and foreign language pedagogy, which all fall within the disciplinary scope of applied linguistics. I work within these areas with a focus on two specific subjects: the international spread of English and the teaching of German as a foreign language.
My primary research area is in the field of World Englishes, which examines the global spread of the English language and its consequential adoption as an additional language in historically non-native contexts. My particular focus is on the impact of English in Germany / Europe. My research explores the influences of globalization and the transnational media in this process, the impact of English in the education system, and the use of English within the business domain.
My other research interests include issues concerning the teaching of German as a foreign language, the use of technology in language instruction, and the integration of research findings in second language acquisition into teaching practice.
